Château Neercanne: podium of surprise
The atmospheric restaurant Château Neercanne is situated within the only terraced castle of the Benelux. The castle was built in 1689 and is known for its lovely baroque garden with protected Unesco status. You can admire the beautiful view of the gardens and the Jeker valley, with the church towers of Maastricht in the distance. You will especially enjoy the gastronomic craftsmanship which, in combination with the wonderful ambiance.
For thirty years, head chef Hans Snijders has been leading this kitchen. The culinary creations are naturally paired with suitable wines for an impressive gastronomical experience. Host Peter Harkema reveals: ‘People sometimes have the idea that Château Neercanne is formal and stuffy. It’s true to say that Neercanne is an institution, and its character must be preserved. But formal and stuffy? Forget it. On the contrary, we like to welcome our guests informally and sincerely. That suits this fabulous location that is so much more than a nice setting. Or as one of our guests once put it, ‘This is like dining in a stately home.’’
Wine cellars in the marl cave
The surprises of Neercanne don’t stop at the castle! The wine cellars of the restaurant also provide an atmospheric ambiance. Situated in the old corridors of the marl cave, lit by candles, the wines are stored at ideal temperature. On the walls of the cave you can read about the history of the castle and of Europe. Texts by well-known wine connoisseurs, signatures of the Royal House and of the signatories of the Maastricht Treaty! Groups thus have every reason to visit the wine cellars and enjoy a wine tasting in situ, or an aperitif before dinner.
